Camino

The Camino from St Joseph’s Church in Subiaco to New Norcia.

The pilgrimage follows the Swan river up to Walyunga National Park, which would have been very familiar to the eyes of Dom Salvado: but from there, we follow the road that winds through the Chittering Valley to Bindoon. The pioneering Monks would have continued along the Avon river towards Toodyay and then up what is now Old Plains road to follow the accessible watering holes: but this would take current walkers an extra day, and at this stage accommodation is hard to source in those sparsely populated areas.

Day 1: Sunday

Day one takes you along Kings Park Road and down in to the CBD via St Georges Terrace. Further along the route passes the major Churches in the City and then onto East Perth and the Swan river foreshore. From here meander along by the river via Maylands and Bayswater and onto Guildford. 18 kms. Click here for more detailed information on Day 1.

Day 2: Monday

The second day is a bit more of a challenge with 7 hours of walking. The route follows the West Swan road and then cuts across the river to cross the Gt Northern Hwy to access Railway Pde and on up to the Feral brewery for lunch!! (early morning coffee can be taken at the Chocolate Factory!!). After lunch the route passes up across the beautiful Bells Rapids and into Walyunga National Park. The end of day 2 will be in the car park there. Transport is provided by coach/car back to the Bullsbrook or Lower Chittering area for overnight accommodation. Click here for more detailed information on Day 2.

Day 3: Tuesday

Day 3 starts from the car park and follows the trail through the Walyunga National Park and up into Lower Chittering Rd via Shady Hills View. This section is about 24kms and accommodation will be in Lower Chittering.

Day 4 : Wednesday

Takes us through the Avon Valley National Park up to Julimar State Forest.

Days 5: Thursday

Takes us through the Julimar State Forest to Pither Reserve

Days 6: Friday

Day 6  follows an inland path along through rolling countryside with abundant bird life and stunning vistas to New Norcia

Day 7: Saturday

The final day follows along the Old Plains Road until it meets the Great Northern Highway, 5kms south of New Norcia. It’s a beautiful day’s walking and there is a fantastic view  of the Deep Space Telescope in the foothills to the west, just after lunch.

Day 8: Sunday

The bus will transport pilgrims back to Perth, leaving at 12.30pm and arriving in Subiaco at 3.00 pm
