The year 2011 marked a significant change for the Camino Salvado, with the trail moving inland away from the Great Northern Highway and following tracks through State Forest and undulating countryside: only birds and footfalls to listen to, no trucks or traffic! The walk takes seven days – returning by bus to Perth on the eighth day. Each pilgrim starts at  St Josephs Church, and each day offers different aspects of our state’s history, our varied spiritual heritage, our extraordinarily beautiful environment: but perhaps most important of all, it gives each walker a time to reflect. The Monastery Town of New Norcia is unique in Australia, and it’s where the Pilgrimage ends: please be aware that this is a very fragile environment and all overnight accommodation has to be booked well in advance, as casual vacancies do not exist. The Camino Salvado Pilgrimages are organized so that the environment of the Monastery is respected: New Norcia is a very important part of our heritage, and one that we cherish and wish to preserve.

History

The Camino de Santiago (The Way of St James) is an ancient Pilgrims route that runs from several points in Spain and France to Santiago in Western Spain. Over the course of centuries, small communities have sprung up along the route to provide the Pilgrims with shelter and food, this makes it an amazing experience. In 1993 it was declared a World Heritage Site and now attracts tens of thousands of walkers each year.  More.
